[Copy]editing is about Amr Ma’roof Nahyi Munkar

cop·y·ed·it /ˈkäpēˌedət/ verb: gerund or present participle: copyediting; edit (text to be printed) by checking its consistency and accuracy.

People as human are created by God as perfect as life being can be. It is mention by surah at Tiin in Al-Qur’an, that God has made the body and the mind of human even the most fine among others. The qisah said even God instructed the angels, the demons, and all His makhlooq to give sujood to Adam, the first human in paradise. This ‘perfectness’ somehow cause some humans being to proud as if they never be wrong in couple of things. Some people  thinks that they do the things fine perceptively because they argue that having a life is about individual matters and others have no business with. Nonetheless, people also make mistakes and rely on other people. As social being, people certainly need other people help in various matters in life. There is no escape from being together with others and no one has any power to live his or her life alone without anyone who is in.

Relating to the naturalness of being a human, miss-watching couple of errors is undeniable. The ‘each’ things will become their naturalness in running a life; to take one example, people have to warn and advise each other in order to revise things to be the correct ones. Regarding this issue, people also has right upon other people to be counseled of their doings. Talking about counseling, in life of publishing, a single author too will need his or her work to be copyedited by one copyeditor. The errors that were made during the process of writing are oftentimes invisible although the author read thoroughly of the manuscript repeatedly. Therefore, copyediting is an implementation of amr ma’roof nahyi mungkar (ordering right and prohibiting wrong) concept in society.

Copyediting can be defined as a-must-step in publishing session of a manuscript. Copyediting does not ruin an author’s work; change the content, tear down the idea, and remodel the masterpiece as different as it can be. On the other hand, copyediting is improving an author’s work of text to become more compact and friendly reading. Copyediting is a process to make one work of an author to be revised of the formatting, accuracy, and style effectively. Since authors are also human being that cannot escape from the carelessness and errors, they furthermore will hire a copyeditor to do something, which is copyediting, upon their raw material of work to become a well furnished work so thus it can be published in a fine and good condition.

Of copyediting, a copyeditor read thoroughly of the manuscript to gain knowledge and information all about the text and the author idea within. After he or she catch and understand the author’s message in the text, he or she may find the errors and cover them in a way of copyediting. The copyeditor marks the errors and revises them as correct as how it is right. During the process and the finishing of copyediting, to copyedit a manuscript of an author, a copyeditor is also not so literately to be as perfect as expected. Copyeditors are not as made free in treating the manuscript and they also made mistake since they are human, too. They are not designed to arrogantly decide whatever they think is right. Therefore, they keep consolidating their observation of the errors with the author of the text. They will consult the best way of copyediting together with the authors.

The decision of an author to ask for copyediting towards his or her work to a copyeditor is applying the concept of amr ma’ruf nahyi munkar for himself/ herself, because anyhow the author wants to make his or her work in corrected ways of formatting, style, and accuracy. On the other hand, too, copyeditors try to serve best advices towards authors. They carefully check and check even the manuscript was copyedited done. They implement the ordering right-prohibiting wrong for this process. They recognize that the genuineness of being a human is that raising correctness and blocking wrongness. Copyeditors-authors attitude here can be considered as loving behavior since both of them warn and advise each other to acquire validity of things; and it potentially bring them together to jannah as Rasulullah saw said, “You will be with the ones you love in heave”’.
